There are a variety of Remedial Massage techniques; most of
which have the flexibility to be applied with differing intensities.
This basically means that massage techniques can be used to
promote the body’s healing from most injuries. The Remedial
Massage Therapist has a range of techniques that can be employed
at each stage of the injury/recovery to enhance the healing
process.
Remedial Massage is a physical therapy incorporating well
documented manual techniques which have been developed to improve
muscular skeletal conditions. It is also an effective treatment
for many other ailments and conditions.
Remedial Massage and the nervous System
Massage can have a profound effect upon the nervous system in several ways.
It stimulates the nerve receptors in the tissues which control tissue tension.
On a sensory level the mechano receptors, which respond to touch, pressure,
warmth etc., are also stimulated. These can have a reflex action which leads
to further relaxation of the tissues and a reduction in pain.
Remedial Massage and General
Circulation
All the cells in the body need a good supply of blood containing
all the nutrients needed for their growth, repair and nutrition.
These cells also need to eliminate the waste materials that
arise from the production of energy & debris from any tissue
damage or inflammation. The techniques in Remedial Massage
have a ‘pumping’ effect which stimulates the circulation
of blood and so increases both the supply & removal of
substances on a cellular level as well as being beneficial
to local tissues.
The general circulatory stimulation can help to improve the
health or the recovery of most other systems of the body. Remedial Massage and the Lymphatic Circulation
Lymphatic vessels are not part of the circulatory system as
they begin at a cellular level and travel in one direction
only, towards the heart. The action of the lymphatic flow
comes from muscle contraction (the lymphatic flow needs the
movement of the muscles to work) and this muscle contraction
is often limited when there is injury.
Remedial massage greatly helps to stimulate the lymphatic
flow.
