Whilst O'listica may have been amongst
the first to practice Aromatherapy in the Cannock area, Aromatherapists
have existed in some form for thousands of years.
The ancient art of Aromatherapy has been with us from as early
as 18,000 BC when according to cave paintings found in France,
plants were used for medicinal purposes. Since these early
times, essential oils have continued to be used by successive
civilizations such as the Ancient Chinese, Indians, Greeks,
Romans and, Egyptians, until today when they have more recently
become a recognised source of natural healing.
What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the ancient practice of using essential oils
to promote health and well being. Whether you want to feel
special, re-energised, relaxed or wish to improve your well
being, essential oils can provide the key.
Essential oils are substances extracted from various parts
of plants, often by distillation. They are sometimes referred
to, as the 'life force' of the plant. They are not oils in
the everyday sense, they are not greasy or fatty and are readily
absorbed into the bloodstream. Each oil is very concentrated
so only a few drops need to be used to be effective.
What can Aromatherapy help?
Stress and stress related disorders, Insomnia, Anxiety, Tension,
Overwork and Fatigue, Depression and Insecurity, Worry, Panic
Attacks, Nervous Exhaustion, Nervous Debility, Menopausal
Problems, Muscular Aches and Pains, Rheumatism and Arthritis,
Therapeutic Treatments for MS, help coming off Tranquillisers,
Lack of Confidence, Skin Disorders.
How is Aromatherapy used?
The Pure essential oils are blended together to reflect the
needs of the individual. These are then applied during a
massage treatment which is deeply relaxing, effective and
suitable for all ages. As well as being used to treat specific
ailments, the smell of essential oils can effect your mental
and emotional state. This is because there are receptors
in the nasal passages which trace directly to the emotional
centre of the brain.
What happens when I have Aromatherapy Treatment?
Your first visit will be slightly longer than subsequent treatments
because it is one of assessment. As Aromatherapy is an holistic
therapy all aspects of your lifestyle will be taken into
account including such things as diet, general medical history
etc. The oils will be selected and blended for you and then
a full body massage will follow. Many people have a feeling
of well being and relaxation after a treatment which in itself
is of great benefit and reduces stress and tension.
How many treatments will I need?
Treatments will vary according to each individual's needs,
how long a particular condition has lasted and how quickly
the body is able to respond. So this is something that will
be discussed during the consultation.
Ways to use Aromatherapy Oils
This is probably the most effective way to use the oils, to
enable them to be absorbed into the bloodstream. However, essential
oils should not be used directly on the skin unless diluted
in a carrier oil. Use no more that 6 drops to 5ml of carrier
oil.
Bath
Essential Oils are ideally suited for both use in the bath,
either individually or blended. Run a warm bath, add 4 - 6
drops and gently agitate the water to disperse the oil. Keep
the door closed to capture the aroma and enjoy a soak for 15
- 20 mins allowing the oils to penetrate the skin. An aromatic
bath is both enjoyable and therapeutic.
Room Fragrancing
All essential oils readily evaporate and so make ideal air
fresheners. They can also be used to create different smells
around the home and are ideal for banishing strong smells.
Add 4 - 8 drops to a pottery vaporiser, add water to the bowl
and place over a night light. Alternatively add 3 - 6 drops
to a saucer of hot water placed on a radiator.
Inhalation (Not suitable for Asthmatics)
Fill a large bowl with very hot water, add 5 - 6 drops of
carrier oil, cover head with a towel and breath slowly and
deeply until relief is felt. 3 - 5 drops on a tissue is an
alternative, it gives instant relief and is a suitable method
for asthmatics.
Other uses include ... Compresses, Bidets, Footbaths, Saunas,
Jacuzzis, Log Fires, Room Sprays, Insect Repellents, Perfumes,
Aromatic Candles, Skin and Hair care.
